Why we print our canvases (and why that's a good thing)
If you've spent any time in needlepoint circles, you've probably heard some version of this: printed canvases aren't "real" needlepoint. Hand-painted is the gold standard, and printed is the shortcut.
We get where that comes from. For a long time, it was true.
Why printed canvases got a bad reputation
Traditional screen printing, the method a lot of that reputation is built on, has real limitations. Ink bleeds into the mesh holes. Colors go muddy. Lines drift out of alignment with the grid, so you're left guessing where one color ends and the next begins. If that's the printed canvas you learned on, it's fair to be skeptical.
That's not the technology we use.
What's actually different about ours
We use an advanced printing process, far beyond traditional screen printing: sharper line placement, cleaner color separation, and ink that sits precisely on the mesh instead of bleeding into it. The result is a canvas that reads as clearly as a hand-painted one, without the guesswork that gave printed canvases their reputation in the first place.
Why printed is worth choosing
- Accessibility. Hand-painting is a genuinely skilled, time-intensive craft, which is exactly why it costs more. Printing lets us offer the same design quality at a price point that doesn't ask you to choose between a canvas and everything else on your list.
- Consistency. Every canvas in a run looks the same. If you're stitching a gift, replacing a piece you loved, or just want the confidence that what you see online is what arrives, that consistency is a feature, not a compromise.
What about hand-painted canvases?
We also offer hand-painted versions of select designs, for stitchers who want that individual, one-of-a-kind artistry. Supporting that kind of handwork is meaningful in its own right. But we don't think "hand-painted" and "worth stitching" have to mean the same thing. A well-printed canvas, done right, is still a beautiful thing to make with your hands.
